The announcement was made by national Chair, Dianne Gray who said:
”Mary has been championing Australian children's literature for many
years and we are thrilled she has accepted this new role. The Trust is
seeking to further its work of bringing the power and pleasure of
books into the lives of children and young people, and Mary's support
and influence will help us achieve this aim. She has given her time,
with generosity and commitment ever since the foundation of the Trust
in 1999 through the initiative of her late husband, the Hon. Ian
Wilson AM, which makes this such a fitting appointment.”

This biennial award is named after Queensland’s first female federal
senator, minister and head of a diplomatic mission for Australia, who
was also president and patron of the Queensland branch of the
Children’s Book Council of Australia for more than 10 years in the
1960s.

Judith is the teacher-librarian at Mount Gravatt Secondary School and
has been the Trust's Queensland state coordinator since 2005. The
award was for Judith's passionate and effective advocacy of literature
for young people and her voluntary work for the School Library
Association of Queensland, the Children’s Book Council of Australia
and the May Gibbs Children's Literature Trust during the past 36
years. She is especially interested in programs featuring authors and
illustrators in school and public libraries, supporting emerging
authors and promoting new publications.
